The Selah Gospel Singers are the great-great grandchildren of the icon of the J. Helen Burks Theological Institute, renowned pioneer of women in ministry, preacher and prophetess, the late Evangelist J. Helen Burks. They bring a wealth of vocal technique and power which has been handed down through seven generations reaching back to the days of North Carolina slavery.
When listening to their songs, you will hear the influence of the ancient African and Cherokee rythms through drums, tambourines, maracas, pounding stick and washboards. Through their acapella renditions, It will not be difficult to experience the influence of the Primitive Baptist Church. And those familiar with the Holiness movement, will readily recognize the influence of the "sanctified church" in the hand clapping and foot stomping songs.
This sensational teen trio, ages 13, 15 and 16, are preserving the legacy of foundational gospel music. They do this not just for their family, but for our family - the Church of the Living God and those who would be saved.
Samuel, Maella, and Jonathan Spires
