The J. Helen Burks Theological Institute was established in 1995 in response to the need for affordable education for those in and aspiring to ministry.  While there are many reputable traditional bible colleges and seminaries, none offered the tight scheduled and in many cases the struggling minister with the opportunity to practically earn academic experience and credentials to enhance their profession.  The Institute recognized the need for a practical and self-paced theological seminary which would consider students' every day life situations.

Named for a pioneer of women in ministry, the Institute encourages students to move beyond the traditional approaches into innovation in ministry and education.  In keeping with J. Helen Burks' philosophy of openess to divine leading and discipline, the Insitute has established a program that is flexible and that gives students the freedom to move at a pace that meets their personal goals and needs.  Through guided independent study, students meeting the admissions requirements can successfully  complete the necessary academic goals to build effectiveness, confidence and validation in ministry.
